The underlying theme is for the young chipmunk to find a mate of his own and begin a family. The reader will understand the need to make good friends that assist each other in all facets of life. The villain is the house cat and to a lesser extent the hound dog who live at the bucolic farm owned by Uncle Jean and Aunt Agnes.

Bubbles saves Charlie early in his adventures. Grateful and curious, Charlie learns all about Bubbles' fascinating life on the river, including how beavers build sturdy dams that create homes and protect their families. Through their newfound friendship, Charlie gains a deeper appreciation for the river and the creatures that call it home.
Meet Rarebit, The rabbit
His friend Rarebit, the cottontail rabbit, introduces Charlie to many of the vegetables in the garden which will be an enlightening experience for the reader as well.
There are 110 illustrations placed within the 24 chapters of the book. Each are precisely done and accurate as to the species that enter the story. Each animal, during conversations with Charlie, elaborate on the habitat and habits that make them what they are. All, perhaps, for the wily fox that chases Charlie and Annie in one of the chapters.
