Meet Guruto, the giraffe!

"Big Feet, the Story" is a tale of hardship, friendship, and perseverance in spite of one's differences. The story is told through the eyes of Guruto, a young Giraffe, who was born with exceptionally large feet. His young feet are SO large, in fact, that he is banished from his herd. His struggles are made easier by the unusual companionship of a Kingfisher bird. This children's book charmingly melds a story of friendship and adventure with accurate educational information regarding some of the animals found in Sub Saharan Africa.

The kingfisher becomes an integral part of the story, guiding Guruto to watering ponds and to his favorite tree, the acacia, where the tough giraffe’s tongue and lips can eat through the thorns on the African tree. The giraffe grows to full height and weight of approximately 20 feet tall and about 4,000 pounds. Quite an impressive animal. The ultimate end to the story is his sense that his old herd is near and he turns away for fear of being seen. As he does so, he hears hyenas baying as if there is prey near and they are about to attack. He runs to assist only to find it is his mother who has fallen into a crevice and can’t get out.

He returns to the herd with his mother and his wonderful companion and friend the kingfisher bird. Here he takes the leadership of the herd from his father who is now proud of his son with the big feet. The appendix to the book shows a map of Africa with the general area of the habitat for giraffes along with a description of their mating, birthing and life on the sub-Saharan continent. It also shows several photos of king fisher birds in all shapes, size, and colors from around the world.
